One of the things you need to consider when you travel with kids is their sleeping patterns. You do not want to alter their sleep if you do not want to end up having grumpy kids during your holiday. Here are great tips on how to maintain their sleeping patterns when you travel with kids:
Maintain the bedtime routine. Do you have bedtime routines? It pays to stick to them as much as possible. For example, if your child has a habit of drinking milk before going to sleep, you can bring along his or her favorite mug and a carton of milk. You can also have some books, if your toddler loves bedtime stories.
Make your kids feel secure. One of the reasons why they cannot fall asleep on the road is they do not feel comfortable with their new surroundings. What you can do is to recreate their safer environment. Perhaps you can tag along their favorite stuffed toy or their well-loved pillow.
Give your child some downtime. It is not only adults who need to feel relaxed after a day of walking and touring. Your kids should too. Since they are creatures of habit, they may still want to watch their favorite TV programs or read some books before going to sleep. Do not deprive them of those. This also means that you should not force them to fall asleep immediately.
Get rid of the distractions. Your children may be used to having their own respective bedrooms at home, but it is going to be completely different once you are already in a holiday. You may have to share hotel rooms or have some “neighbors” who like to chat or party in the middle of the night.
Limit the distractions in their sleep. Look for hotels that have adjustable lighting systems in the guest room. Do not let them stay near the wall, so they do not get easily disturbed by any noise.
Let them get used to the new time zone. You do not want your children to suffer from jet lag; otherwise, they will spend the rest of the holiday giving in to tantrums. Even if you are running the risk of making them grumpy during the flight, do not let your children fall asleep. You can entertain them with perhaps some coloring books or DVDs you can play in your portable media device.
Give them nutritious food. You want to maintain the health of your kids even if you’re far away from home. This way, you can avoid getting them sick or jacked up with too much sugar because of junk food. Make sure that there is always water they can drink for hydration.
