What are considered hazardous activities and sports? Are we insured when we buy travel insurance?
More often than not, most people do NOT read the travel insurance policy terms before buying one.
Many are not aware but it is a common practice for most insurers to EXCLUDE “hazardous activities/sports”such as any underwater activities involving the use of underwater breathing apparatus, horse riding, ice or winter sports, ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) and many others in their travel insurance in Singapore.
Would you be surprised to know your travel insurance policy may not cover you for winter sports due to policy terms like “unless you carry out the activities under the supervision of a licensed guide or instructor“?
Travel is an exciting adventure but also poses many unpredictable situations.
- Do not start by picking the one with the lowest price when you buy travel insurance online, check out the limitations and exclusions (if the list is too restrictive, maybe you should consider another policy). And don’t necessarily select the one with the highest premium thinking that the higher the price the better the product.
- If you are going on a mountain climbing or diving holiday, make sure the holiday insurance cover includes high risk activities. This may cost slightly more, but you can really end up stranded overseas when you buy the wrong policy.
- Whether you are comparing NTUC travel insurance, Chartis Travel Guard, Liberty TourCare Plus or other travel insurance plans in Singapore, make sure you are comparing plans with the same limits, benefits and conditions beside the premiums.
Here are some examples of exclusion of “hazardous activities/sports”.
NTUC Income Travel Insurance says it will EXCLUDE
“engaging in any hazardous activities/sports including but not limited to caving, potholing, rock climbing (except on man-made walls) or mountaineering necessitating the use of ropes, any underwater activities involving the use of underwater breathing apparatus, skydiving, cliff diving, bungee jumping, BASE (Building, Antenna, Span, Earth) jumping, para gliding, hang gliding, parachuting, white water rafting, dragon boating, hunting, horse riding, polo, show jumping, mountain biking unless otherwise agreed in writing by us, but not including the following activities carried out for leisure under the supervision of a licensed guide or instructor: hot air balloon ride whilst airborne, ice or winter sports, hiking or trekking; usage (including pillion riding) of any motorcycle, moped or mechanically assisted pedal cycles, ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) unless agreed by us in writing;”

If you are planning for a farm stay holiday to Australia, it is not uncommon that it could lead to a horse riding experience; or your vacation to Gold Coast may include a snorkeling trip. What if you were told that the travel insurance policy you have purchased does not cover horse riding or snorkeling should injury happen and a claim arise?
